Exactly a 96 and a 97 are both Pre-98 era 
The only pre 98 that wouldnt work are the first 95's with the cable driven speedo.
The 97/98 one you found needs to be from a 98.
Trust me CarDoc over at FCO ripped me off with a pre98 cluster he sold me for my 99. He said it worked fine in his than a month later posted that he had all the same problems that I did
