Rich, I am not sure what the 3rd bolt is that you speak of. Maybe it wasn't on the 98's because I only had 2 bolts. As for the vise grips, I thought you were saying that the bottom bolt was the one you stripped. If not then you should be able to get the bottom one off with just a normal 6 point socket and 3/8 drive ratchet, just need to be patient as you only get 1 or maybe 2 clicks each time on the ratchet.
Theres 3 bolts on the 2.5 V6, 2 on the bottom and one on the top. Could be someone changed your alt. before and just didnt bother putting it back in cause its such a pain in the ass
