I gutted my precats and yes you will get a cel for the downstream O2 sensors afterwards. You can rectify that by installing MIL Eliminators. One for each downstream sensor. About 30 bucks for a pair. I don't really think you can check the condition of your precats without cutting open the housing. I've heard people say they get a rotten egg smell when they go bad. John
