hi
i have a chance to buy a fully loaded 98 mystique LS sport with less than 100,000kms(canada) on it.
the people who own the car say it has a 2.0L four cylinder
engine in it.everything i can find out about the mystique sport says that they only came with the 170hp 6cyl engine.
1)is it possible for this car to have the 4cyl?(98 mystique LS-Sport(canadian model)
2)how are the automatic trannys in the mystique/contour family(i had a sable and it was replaced twice in 160000kms).

the car is 100 miles away from me and i don't want to drive that far if it has the 4cyl engine.
the people who own the car only took it to the dealer for service and can't tell between the 4cyl and 6 cyl engine.
anyway thanks in advance

To my knowledge, All LS models have the V6 Duratec. I could be wrong since it may be different in Canada.

Sounds like the kind of people who don't know that engine oil needs to be changed regularly...

Ask them for the Vehicle Id Number which they can find either on the driver side dash right before where it meets the windshield or on the cars registration (hopefully they do this in canada too)

VIN Decoder
That link should take you to the VIN decoder in the FAQ section. Use that to make a final determination on the engine type. Hope this helps

Other ideas: it should display a v6 badge right on the speedometer; 24 valve duratec should also be very obvious right on the engine cover. Since they want to sell this thing they should be more than willing to provide all of this info.

As for our trannys, the same rules still apply...

If not properly maintained, they are crap.

If properly maintained, they are actually pretty decent. As far daily driving goes anyway.
