With the short throw it extends the bottom half of the shifter below the pivot ball. On the 2000 models the cable will rub on the bottom plate below the shifter. With the new bottom plate on the outside of the car (below the shifter) instead of inside on the bottom of the shifter it gives the added clearance (about 0.125"-0.250") for the shifter to work properly. You will see that the cable assembly will sit slightly into the oval opening in the floor board with the new shifter. The plate will sandwich the floor board between the plate and shifter and allow the cable to sit down into the opening. Works very well...it is what I have in my car and I am VERY happy
