A few that I remember hearing the most are:
AC DC
Foghat
The Cars
ZZ Top
Van Halen
Billy Idol
I like almost all music. Variety is the spice of life.

Gary Numan is not Metal or Rock he is the "God Father" of modern electronica unless you are counting the oldest "Tubeway Army" version of his music which was "English Punk", which he used to get his foot in the door. And give me a break, REO Speedwagon was a teeny bopper group One of the best rock albums is Frank Marino's (of Mahogany Rush) "The Power of Rock and Roll"

IIRC, VH-1 ran the 100 greatest hard rock/heavy metal bands and led Zeppelin was the winner with Black Sabbath no. 2. Van Halen and Hendrix were also top 10. Its sad that many of the groups listed above have been mostly forgotten and are no longer played on the radio (at least not here). I was raised in Chicago and used to listen to the greatest radio station ever called Triad (mid-70's), which was pretty much an underground type station. You heard stuff on there that was never heard elsewhere and was only broadcasting at night. Here's a few more favorites:
April Wine Captain Beyond Alan Parsons Project (not actually hard rock, but close in some respect) Rory Gallagher (sp?)

Hows about Blue Oyster Cult? Ooh, and Captain Beyond!! Have two of their albums on CD. That cable only station I DJ'd at I could play what I wanted.

I did a column on this for a friend's e-zine, but pure metal. My top ten included the obvious (Maiden and Priest were the Gods that I praised, Sabbath) but also included Accept. Udo Dirkschneider rocks!
In the more Rock and Roll vein, I have loved Van Halen (all three versions had their high points, mainly due to Eddie) since I was a kid, loved Ratt WAY more than Crüe, and still wish that I was Gene Simmons. He had a great interview on Much Music: "The reason that I do anything is so that the women of the world will lick my boot heels."

Tampa must suck then. Most of the stations around here play them in regular rotation.
