Of the 70's and 80's. Newer bands like Metallica don't count. Here are a few of my favorites:
Budgie (anybody hear of these guys?) Black Sabbath (the Dio years) Robin Trower Ronnie Montrose Michael Schenker UFO early Scorpions Triumph Rush Mahogany Rush Joe Satriani
I'll think of others...

Why not? Newer? They had their first show in '82 and first album in '83. In fact, I wouldn't count anything from them after '89, so they're definitely an '80's band. Heck, Satch's first album was in '84.

OK, Metallica counts. Wasn't familiar with their work in the early/mid 80s. I am trying to exclude the 90's and newer bands which can be different thread.

Even though he died in 1970 so it's kinda cutting it close for your criteria...the man who is largely responsible for advancing rock music...JIMI HENDRIX!

There are three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way!
Isn't that just the wrong way?
Yeah, but faster!

Wasn't "sky high percentage" their only listenable song, albeit a great one.
