I got a call tonight from my mom saying that when she went to the Ford Dealership for some work on her escape they told her the K&N Filter that we put in her car voids her warranty. Now, I know that I read on the box when we put it in, that the K&N filters will NOT void a US vehicles warranty. I checked the web site and this statement is true. He also went on to tell her is was way to dirty and she needed a new stock filter, the escape has 15,000 miles. The filter put in at 5,000ish. He also told her the problems she was having are because of the K&N, man I wish I was there to tell this guy a thing or two. Of course my mom will believe him and he took full advantage of it.

Yeah thats total BS because that K&N w/ 10K on it is doing a waaay better job than a brand new filter does, thats for sure. The only way they can say it voids a factory warranty is if they can prove it does some type of damage to the vehicle because of it...yeah, I'm sure they can do that I'd go right back up there an raise hell!

Get it in writing from the guy, that the warranty is void.

Did your mom go ahead and have work done?

Call K&N for further clarification.

You (your mom) may be due a refund if charged incorrectly.

But, stay cool and on top of things. Yelling & telling the guy off, and you lose the argument and may not be able to deal with them again.... just make a voodoo doll or something later

There is a law against this sort of stuff. I can't remember it offhand, but i know people on here do.

Basically it says that aftermarket intake and exhaust cannot void a warranty. It also goes on to say that whatever has been modified/added to the stock vehicle, must be proven to be the cause of the damage.

I certainly hope that she did not pay for anything and if she did, I hope the tech get's ripped a new one, run up the flagpole by his whity tighties and then fired.

It's called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, says basically that the warranty can't be entirely voided due to use of aftermarket product, the dealer/warrantor has to show that the aftermarket product was the cause of the failure that isn't being warranted.

That being said, what was the problem with the Escape? It's possible that an over-oiled K&N could cause problems...

Actually, it could theoretically void a warranty.

If it had been in there 10,000 miles and never cleaned, and dirt was obviously getting through due to lack of oiling then you're SOL (Wasn't Big Jim the one with the story about the guy who toasted his VW in this way?)

Or on the other hand if you did clean it and over-oiled it so it took out the MAF (very common) than you're on the hook for a new one. You could clean the MAF yourself, but I really doubt the dealer would risk cleaning it and having a comeback call when it's just as easy to replace it.

Thats why you keep the old filter system, throw it back in and ford wont know, then put the aftermarket one on after you get it back from ford.

According to K&N, the filter actually performs better when dirrty than when clean. They say that the dirt helps to trap more dirt while still allowign adequate airflow.

Friend had a K&N drop-in on his v6 stang before he sold it and didn't void his warranty. Though it was probably responsible for the problems he was having. I don't think he kept it cleaned/oiled right at first. Though it was too late. After dealership "fixed",, intake manifold clean, and new MAF, he still had problems, but that's because our dealership sucks.

To a point -

"Our testing has demonstrated that on average, K&N air filters have an overall efficiency rating of between 97 and 99%. With proper cleaning K&N air filters will protect your engine for the life of your vehicle."

"20. How do I know when to clean the filter?

The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage."

It is also dependant on the tackinesss of the filter oil - without that crap can just fly on by.

BTW - you'll see I have a K&N on mine, but I check it a ccouple times a year since we're basicly a big dusty desert here and try and clean it carefully wheen it lookss bad.
