I never realized what a major cost a DJ for a reception is. We're meeting with one tomorrow, $2500!! Sounds a bit outrageous to me, but it's not a service I've ever needed before.
Anyone else out there have anything I can compare it to? I'm not sure if being in a big city has anything to do with it or not. Is this extreme or the norm?

Haha... $2500. Holy [censored].
I've had DJs at parties at anywhere from $50 to $250. But $2500....

Depends on the venue size Depends on the day of the week. Saturday = $$$ Sunday = $ Ask to see previous videos from more than one wedding to see how his MC skills are. DJ's need to talk with the group.
$2500 is high Average DJ in Silicon Valley for a 150 person reception is around $1000 - $1500 on a Saturday. (Two girls I work with are getting married this Summer)
Makes me want to get into the DJ business (music is free) add some big amps, big speakers, a fader, lots of cable and a couple of Mp3 CD players and your set. I've never heard of a wedding DJ spinning vinyl?

i started a DJ biz a few years ago with my friend. And thats about right for weddings and proms. some would be $600 some would be $3000. We would bring almost $1500 in free giveaways though. Plus we didnt specialize in weddings so you have tux rental too. i sold it last year though. Just make sure you see videos or something to see what his MC skills are like, and make sure you like his persoality.

Spend the money on the booze. From a potential guest standpoint, with enough booze I will hear my own music.
That's too much.

the company i work for (www.partytimesound.com) charges 395-695 depending on level of DJ you want. Prices vary depending on day of the week and lighting package you want.
