My neighbor is a cop... I went and talked to him one day while he was driving by.... He wasnt wearing a seatbelt.. so i asked why.... He has the choice to wear one or not... I couldnt help but ask why its not required... Since he might have to jump out of his car at any time he doesnt wear one...For example on his night shift he got a call of an aggravated man threatining to kill himself.. he was sitting in his 4 year olds room and put a shot gun down his throat.. pulled the trigger... this was aft er a 3 hour stand off with cops trying to talk him down... Now think if the cops wouldnt have been there and his son to walk into the room.... A little off topic but honestly I dont care if cops speed or not.. Next time they might be speeding to get to that house where that next crazy man is so his children dont walk in on his corpes...

just my take on it-

lina

I agree but when they speed they are putting other peopleā??s lives in danger. Most of the time it is some drunken person making a fool out of their selves. I don't think that is worth putting other peopleā??s lives in danger. A drunk will always cause problems.

I saw a cop tackle a drunk. The drunk fought and fought so the police officer grabbed him by the testicles and told the man he would cut his testicles out if he did not stop fighting. The drunk quit fighting and the police officer handcuffed him. There are a lot of drunks where I live and they love to fight and cause problems when they get drunk.

i think the drunk that gets in his car...IS far worse than a police officer speeding to the scene so that drunk doesnt have the chance to get behind the wheel... The drunks intoxicated... his reaction time is impaired... I think the drunks a bigger risk... He hits a family coming home from a road trip at 2 a.m. at 70 mph... He kills everyone in the car.. I would have wanted that cop to be there no matter what...

That is true. Alcohol is legal so nothing is done about drunks. I see the same people arrested for DUI over and over. Public drunk is not considered a serious crime. Then there are the alcoholics who get drunk at home and beat the crap out of their family. Drunks are released right back into society where they cause more problems. Most judges consider alcohol OK but I don't. I think alcohol is a drug.

In his patrol car?

If so, would it bother you as much if it was Joe Schmo in his Accord?

Obviously there is no topic to this thread if it keeps getting thrown around like this... My point was that police officers think that just because they have that patrol car and a uniform that they can go and do all the things that every non law enforcing person can't do... The speeding, no seatbelt, limo tinted windows... These may seam small, but it's like having a teacher telling kids they can't smoke on school property, but then going out back after school hours and lighting one up.. The law extends to everyone on the road, and yes there will be people that speed and cause problems, but to be an officer and to do it for no reason is just silly.. I don't know how many times I'll be driving at night and have a squad car just storm up behind me, match my speed, not pass me even though it's a 4 lane highway, then turn off 5 miles later after he notices that I'm NOT doing anything wrong. Oh well, there will always be debate on this topic, Im not saying anyone is right or wrong. I see things that sandman, horse, and 1314 say that I believe to be valid points, but some I don't agree with at all... Guess it's a crime to have an opinion these days too.

I don't argue against officers having both reason and training to use excessive speed through traffic (with or without their lights/siren). But it would be extremely ignorant to not accept the fact that some cops use their badge to roll stop signs or switch on/off their lights through a red light (both of which I have seen numerous times).

An opinion is to be celebrated these days- what are you talking about- we live in a pacified society where EVERYONE HAS to conform to "MY" Ideals-
Its nice to have someone to debate with.

And here is a small tidbit of info I recieved on my first day working dispatch,
of the 100% of the uniformed police officers:
10% have no real business being in law enforcement,
80% do the job and get a paycheck,
10% are the Best people, and make damn good cops.

This was told to me by one of my sgt's - he also noted that I would be able to tell who was who within a few months-
I have met a few of our Top 10% they are FANTASTIC cops, I have also met a few of our bottom 10% - I really dont like them - and they get a lot of TA's because they are jerks, and a lot of the 80% guys just want to get home to their families at night.

I know that these numbers are by no means in concrete, and they were just one mans vision of law enforcement, but to this day I think he was right.

Thank goodness for the 10% who are stellar men who take more crap in one day than most people ever see in their lifetime, and can be great cops. They get shot at and complained to each and everyday, spit on and beat up, all for a lowsey "good job and write more tickets" from the LT's. If it werent for these few - all agencies would be severly handicap, and each one of us would have to go home each night and hide in fear in our houses.

(and im not joking about the write more tickets bit- we just lost one of our best officers to another agency because at his evaluation one of the capt's told him that he hadnt been writing enough citations- )

I will never understand why they have to keep the bad ones. I worked at a Federal Correctional Facility and the problems there kept getting worse and worse. I reported the problems and they would say "we will look into it". The counselor they hired was out on the streets with the prisoners dealing drugs and doing things they ought not to be doing. The prisoners started to confront me after work with threats because I would not bend the rules for them. After prisoners started to get stabbed and things got worse and worse I left that job. I did what I could but nothing I did made a difference.

The problem is that money is considered good. It does not matter how the money is gotten. A corrupt dishonest person with lots of money is always considered better than a poor honest person without money. That is why there are so many drugs available in jail (gaurds and bribe money). Money is all that matters to some people.

Horse, it's good to see someone can take opinion as well as yourself. I do agree that there are some very honest, straight forward, and hard working officers out there. I have personally encountered quite a few of them, which makes me feel a lot better that there are some "good guys" out there. The only reason I brought up the points that I have in this thread, is because of the topic itself. If the topic was talking about something positive that a police officer had done, then I would have chimed with something in regards to that, and not stormed off on how I can't stand police. I appreciate the hard working officers that make this city what it is, but will express my opinion about the ones that make this city what it isn't.
