This coming from someone who IS in law enforcement? My direct interaction with said officer gives me the right to state an opinion ABOUT said officer.

I'm not going to file a complaint. She wasn't out of line. She was just hassling me unnecessarily for stupid things that the police would normally never bug you about.

Who the [censored] signals to pull into their OWN driveway? I bet she doesn't signal to pull into her OWN driveway. She was just being a [censored]. There was no reason to pull him over. In fact, I've done the same thing in front of cops in my neighborhood and they just drove on. Fortunately, in my town, the cops know they have better things to do and the reduction in gang violence is proof of that.+

Who doesn't download copywrited video and music? Does this make it legal?

Sorry,
Infuryum but I have to say that had you been curtious and told her the situation, new car, she probably wouldn't have bothered writing anything up. I agree it's a silly infraction but I can't fault the police for being vigilant. The amount of people in this area with outstanding infractions is insane. To bad the cops are affraid most of the time to do anything about them.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I have zero problem being cited for no insurance.

I just see a not-so-fine line between vigilant and ridiculous. I should never have been hassled in the first place.

I say hassled because I was about to say "stopped," but then realized I was ALREADY stopped in my driveway and OUT of my car before she pulled up and hit the lights. The whole situatin from beginning to end was her having a chip on her shoulder and simply exercising her rights because she CAN.

It's the same argument the NRA folks give about owning guns.

Me: "Why do you own a fully automatic rifle with a sniper scope?"

Charleton Heston: "Because it's my right and I can."

It gives no reason WHY something is done. It only justifies that the action is not incorrect. I don't pick and choose the laws I follow. She has more than enough ability to pick and choose the laws she enforces. No turn signal on a deserted street at 1:00am in KELLER, TX, of all places, is not a situation to be nagging and picking.

On that note, what would have happened if I had said "no, I don't think I'll give you my license today" and walked upstairs into my home?

You're fine for 2 reasons:

1> As said, all you gotta do is go to the clerk. They'll call your insurance company to verify and you're done; I'm sure they won't check the time of the ticket; and if they do, then there's always #2

2> I assume you have coverage on some car. In Texas, your existing insurance automatically covers any purchased automobile for 30 days.

I did not know that.

She also asked me several times how long the car has been in my name. I told her a couple weeks, tops. She still wrote the ticket. I bet she knew that.

Don't gp that far into it, just tell them you were waiting for the new cards to arrive.

She did what she was supposed to do. She should write the ticket, because you didn't have proof. If you had gotten in an accident that would have been a real problem.

But she also should have explained 1> that your existing coverage extends to your purchased cars for 30 days and 2> that all you needed to do was take proof of insurance or proof that your had just bought the car and hadn't arranged insurance yet to the clerk to get it taken care of.

The office that pulled me over (the one time ever, and it was in Frisco on 380 in the middle of nowhere like Keller) was very nice and explained the process of to me when I couldn't find my insurance papers.

I found something in the FAQ for the Texas Department of Insurance:

Quote:

When I buy an additional car or a replacement car, is it automatically covered?
Yes, but there are certain limitations. An additional car automatically has the same coverage as the car with the broadest coverage provided by your policy. For example, if you have two cars - one with liability coverage only and one with liability, collision, and comprehensive - and you buy a third car, the third car will automatically have liability, collision, and comprehensive.
......
Be sure to notify your insurance company as soon as possible that you have added or replaced a car and which coverages you want for the new car. You could lose coverage on the new car if you wait longer than 30 days.

That works. As long as no one questions the ticket date being the same as the insurance card date.

But, if they do question it (and I doubt it will happen); Show proof of your insurance of your other car (which I imagine expires in some time) and some sort of proof of buying the new car (like a copy of a check), and you're done. As long as the date on the check is within the coverage dates of your other car and within 30 days of your ticket date.

Good advice, though.
