This is a general kind of question for my knowledge if someone doesn't mind giving their input.

After getting some tire spin on the ice yesterday i noticed a clutch burning smell. I've always wonderd why if the clutch is contacting with the flywheel properly and the 2 are not slipping against each other, what causes the clutch smell? Is it just the wheels spinning to quick, and overheating the tranny in general? I know the clutch packets (which i don't know much about) of an auto are more tempremental then the clutch of a standard trans so I was just curious....

If your Contour is equipped with Traction Control,
what you are smelling could be your BRAKES.

Thank you for your answers. I'm thinking it was maybe the torque converter clutch after reading my ford service manual and hearing some of your answers.

You would not smell the TQ clutch. It is inside the TQ in the oil. Check your oil. If it is brown and/or smells burnt, change it immediately.

Do you have Traction Control?

Was your e-brake dagging? (The sometimes freeze up from water in the cable)

A burning clutch smell on an automatic trnsmission car is usually the brakes.

This car is non traction control. A friend had suggested to me too that it could have been the smell of the tires heating up against the ice as they spun.

I'll check my transmission fluid today and make sure it hasn't been cooked, good call.
