The problem with replacing your's with the OEM CD player is that the CD player only came with the premium sound package and not many tape players came with that.
The CD player does not have in internal amp and most of the tape units did so you would end up having to do more work to fit in a OEM CD player than putting in a aftermarket CD player since you would also need to change your wiring and install the (Crappy) amp behind the glovebox.
If you already have the premium sound with the amp then ignore what I just said and contact me because I have an OEM CD player that I pulled out of my car about 3 years ago that I would be willing to get rid of cheap (the external amp is dead but the HU works fine).
If you decide to go aftermarket then I have a 3 year old pioneer HU that could go cheap also

I dont know anything about the protege/miata unit but from what the other poster said it sounds like it might be your best choice so you can retain the stock look and feel of your contour while still getting updated electronics and an internal amp.
