Shop rates between all the major online ticketing groups. If you plan on doing consistent travel overseas, check into getting a membership to www.bestfares.com. I use them almost exclusively for overseas travel. To put it in perspective, I've NEVER paid more than $550 for an overseas ticket in the past 8 years of travel to Europe and Central America, off-season or peak season..

This is going to change with a trip to UAE next month, though, but I'll be saving close to $1K on the ticket as compared to other agencies and airlines, so Bestfares is still the best place for overseas rates that I've found...

Unfortunately it's going to be something of a working vacation, though that doesn't mean I won't be able to have a little fun.

Flight is gonna suck, though. 20 hours in the air with only a 2 hour layover inside that.

Yea I've tried looking thru the big carriers like Northwest and United and such, but havent seen anything for less than $850. Does the day you fly have anything to do with the price?

Absolutely. Certain carriers run specials if you fly out on Saturdays; others seem to like Tuesdays and Wednesdays for one reason or another. Play with the dates a bit and see what you can come up with. I've shaved a little bit off of ticket prices by flying early in the morning, late at night and on certain days.

You most likely won't save hundreds off of the ticket, but if you are watching your dollars and are flexible you can save $50-75...

Try checking with a travel agent. The airlines give them special rates since they move so many tickets.

And agents mark the prices up and take the profit.

I have to go through a travel agent when I travel for business and I always can find the same flights for much cheaper on the sites like cheaptickets and others.

Travel agents are really about making travel "packages". it is a convience thing for the clueless traveler.
