I had a similar experience when I went with a buddy to test drive a 98 CSVT he liked. The car started over-heating 1/2 way through the test drive. We had to leave the car at a quicky mart, and hitch a ride back with a person from the dealership.
The best part is during the drive back to the dealership the salesman asked if we were interested in the car.
