KBB = fiction. Their whole reason for being is to give dealers a low trade in # combined with a high retail #. Dealers are their main market.

BTW, www.nadaguides.com is the consumer site with retail #'s only. The industry subscriber-only site is www.nada.com/b2b .

Edmund's "True Market Value" is the best I think. Also, look in the "Smart Shopper" forums for the "Real World Trade in Values" thread. It has postings from a real buyer of used cars and he is on the money with what cars are really worth.

$6450

'98 CSVT with 53k miles.

I could sell it for $8k.

This isn't counting all the new parts and the xenons + leather recaro seats in there. That alone would bump it up another $3k, but if I were to sell it, I'd be happy getting $9500 for it.

I guess I'll be keeping it for the long haul. . .

From Edmunds.com:

Totaled 08/15/03 with 64,200 miles on it, other guys insurance gave me $8133 for the car. I only owed $4500. Made for a nice little down payment on the Escape.

As I said before, I'm amazed at how Edmunds has plus/minus values for color since some are more desirable than others.

Supposedly green and blue are "out", while silver and tan are "in".

Also, mods add little value to a car's price. You'd have to part them out to get back any money. Ask anyone who's sold a car.

Mods actually take away from what a dealer will give you if you go to trade in your car.

I know I wouldnt want to buy a ghetto modded car thinking it's already been beat on.

Well if this isn't hte most depressing thread....

96 SE, 121k miles, Excellant condition (glossy paint, perfect interior)

NADA: $2500
KBB Trade-in: $1675
KBB Private-Party: $2925

Amount Owed: $1400

I already made the decision a while ago that I was driving this thing into the ground. But its extremely irritating for insurance companies that quote me a price that is more than the car is worth for 1 year of freakin insurance. How freakin retarded is that?

Insurance, the last legal SCAM.
