I would have to say....Yea.
I agree, get it on a lift and check the torque boxes. Also with the 89' any parts from 88'-93' will interchange. How many miles are on this car?
If you do get it, there are plenty of sites to help you with it.
Good luck.

My first car when I was learning how to drive was a 89 GT covertable. I worked on it in the spring with my cousin and he let me drive it. The electrical in those cars are awful. He sold a few years later because the whole wiring harness was shot. I'd say if it was kept in a garage a lot, and the body looks good, and the engine clean, well and a mechanic takes a look, then yeah. But I'd be careful cuz people beat the sh!t out of those cars.

The wiring harness in my '88GT looks much better (ie, almost new) at 15 years old than the one in my '95 Contour did at 7 years old (cracking and breaking, bare wires, etc).
I've had no electrical problems with the '88GT, and the wiring is in fine shape.
There was a problem with some (maybe all) '89 models where the wires to the connectors that connect the engine harness to the fuel injection harness are supposedly too short, this was addressed with a recall which consists of a couple of extensions which are added. Supposedly this can cause a check engine light and fluctuating idle problems.
I put them on my '88GT (the parts are most likely discontinued from Ford by now..I was only able to get one from Bill Jenkins, the other I had to get from Green Sales Co.) to try to fix a problem which caused an "EGR position sensor voltage low" code, but that turned out to be a bad vacuum line (the one I cracked..maybe it was already cracked and I made it crack all the way through?)

my dads 88gt conv. had a lot of electrical problems, i think there was a problem with the ground, the gauges would work occasionaly, but after a couple of people tackled it it seemed to be alright.

When I got mine the temperature gauge wasn't working, but that was due to a bad temperature sender.
The low oil level and low coolant level sensors are non-functional, but who needs that crap anyway...

well i called the owner and touched bases just a bit...found out the car was at the office so i went to take a look at it...found out through my girl that he was supposed to be on his way to the office as well..i thought it was to meet me but apparently it was to take his squeeze to lunch or something...
anyway my girl's sister called him and he said he would return in about 20 mins...i said fine and went to get lunch myself...i got back maybe 30 mins later or so and he still hadn't returned
i figured him for a flake but whatever...
on to the car...definitely looks like a 15yr old car...its been repainted but still looks not so good up close...no fogs, right headlight with condensation, trim pieces missing inside and others not fitting right...body pieces out side look like the car has been banged up at least mildly
the one thing that really stood out to me though...i 'thought' the guy said 100k when on the phone...he responded 'yeh 100' when i was trying to clarify....i did not get a clear, full on look at the odometer but the first digit was way too crooked to be a '1'....a guy in the office told in my sis in law that its 500k on the odometer!!!!!! is that even possible????
somewhere under 100k on 'new' motor but i doubt its very new at all now...anyway, if i didn't need a primary car so bad this one might still be an option, but not at this point...the guy was supposed to call me and i still have not heard from him and its been almost 2 hrs now
o well...
