just wanted to know if anyone has experience with or opinions... i may have the opportunity to get one soon...havent seen it or talked with the owner...just learned of it from my girls sister who works with the owner's wife...he's selling it pretty cheap because he needs to get a work truck and wants a quick sale...however, he will hold it for me if i want it and my girl will buy it with her tax refund ...its either that or fix my tour which im not sure i want to do...even after i get the engine fixed theres still a ton of shiz i need to get done and im just not sure i want to bother with it...at least with the mustang i know i can find a sh!tload of parts and fun stuff for it supposedly it is in good shape and has some amount of modding done though im not clear on what...but streetable and daily driven...his wife has been driving it so im betting that its not been too badly abused with her behind the wheel i know someone that has experience with mustangs from that era and will see about getting him to take a look at it with me, if i decide to go for it just looking for thoughts from the guys 'round here

My only problem with buying a used 5.0, especially a modded one, is that its most likely be run like hell.

not to thread hijack or anything but out of the 5.0 Mustangs, are the GTs the only ones that are fast?
Because I've seen quite a few older mustangs with 5.0 badges (ex: Mustang LX)...

as far as i know the 5.0 in a mustang is the same...the mustang lx from back in the day was basically a lighter gt...didn't have all the gt body cladding of the era but had the same engine and suspension...looked better too imo...
there are degrees of fast with them though as the power was continually increased pretty much as mustang battled the camaro/bird for top spot
for 89 im finding that the power was 'okay' at least but the torque is still pretty good (~300 lbs/ft) even today

As long as a Fox body isn't completely trashed, IMO, they are a good buy. Way too much aftermarket goodies can be had for way too cheap. That makes buying a 5.0 so nice.
Good luck.

Same advice holds true for any 15 year old car... brake lines, fuel lines, wheel bearings, suspension bushings, ball joints (I think the Fox uses them), heater core, weatherstripping, radiator, vacuum lines, etc. will all need to be replaced soon if they haven't already. Enjoy.

If it hasn't been abused, then its likely a great car. Of course, even if it has been abused doesn't mean it's automatically a bad car to buy. The fox mustangs are by and large extremely easy to work on (especially compared to a contour) and really easy to modify to your personal tastes of performance (both straight line, and corner carving, despite popular opinion).
Probably the most telling way of checking if a particular car has been abused or not, is check the torque boxes. Basically the sheet metal area that makes up the body-side mount of the rear lower control arms. Abused cars tend to have cracks, etc. around this area. Note that even if the area is cracked up, a good body or chassis shop can replace or reinforce this area fairly easily, so use it as a tool to get the price down.

I have an 88GT, so far it's needed:
water pump radiator TFI module fuel pump alternator oil pump
About the most expensive item to replace is the oil pump, and that's mainly labor. Next down would be the fuel pump, and everything else is EASY stuff.
Brake lines/fuel lines/vacuum lines have not been replaced, they are in decent shape (except for one of the hard plastic ones that broke when I bent it too far...bypassed it with rubber vacuum hose), the wheel bearings are supposed to be replaced when the brakes are done, shocks/struts should be replaced on any 15-year-old car so do the suspension bushings then, weatherstripping is an easy thing to replace on that car, and the heater core hasn't given me any trouble.

my first new car when I was 19 was the '89 mustang LX 5.0 manual w/ factory 3.27:1 gears(which I had them locate for me)...nothing could touch it. My brother was jealous & bought a firebird formula (pathetic, he wanted to trade often). I had the rear bushings replaced twice & the tires were bald, all before 8,000mi. It was a torque monster... I have to say, I still dream of that car
