Ask them why California owners are entitled to a lesser protection under the law than is a resident owner in any other state?
Point them to Section 1 of the 14th Amendment (Equal Protection Clause).

Actually, it is the state of California's idea. When govenrments wanted to alter the emissions warranties a few years ago from 5/50, California went with 3/50 for most things and 7/70 for many of the more expensive items while the rest of the states went for 3/36 for most things with 8/80 for many of the more expensive things. On balance, the two programs give about the same level of protection, they just do it differently.

It is also Ford being cheap - they could choose to honor the more common Federal warranty, but do not. My Dodge has aa section under the CA warranty that is labeled "Parts Covered 8/80 - cat converter, PCM - see federal emmision warranty" or the like.
Obvioulsy they don't have to do that - but it is better than potentially pissing off customers by refusing work that most assume they are entitled too. Yes they'll lose money on service, but they'll make more on repeat buys. I SPECIFICALLY avoided any Ford product (Freestar) and got the Grand Caravan because of the Ford "T.F.B." attitude when my front spring brok at 35,000 miles and 37 months. On the other hand I had a Neon headgasket replaced for free at 38,000 miles - so now I drive another Dodge.

I'm thinking mystery mod from buckshot.com & a high flow cat from ctamotorsports.com.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
