E checks are a real pain. I've lived with it here in northern Ohio for as long as I can remember. We have to do it every other year and it's about $20. I've heard that MSDS headers are a problem, good to see they probably aren't.

I think NJ has a harder emissions test that OH. I've passed twice (every other year as well) with my headers and the underbody cat.

The very first 2 years of Emissions Inspections is guaranteed by the Vehicle Manufacturer.
So unless your car is more than 2 years old, it shouldn't go to anyone other than your dealership.

Everyone seems to be talking about PA here. NY just started this new testing and I don't know if this is exactly what you are all talking about. I heard that when the computer is hooked up that it is actually monitoring whats going on. So this made me think that if you have o2 simulators on that it might not pass you because they are not oscillating like they should. Just wondering if anyone in NY has tried this and what the result is?

NY, IIRC, is going to hook a computer device to your tailpipe and see what is coming out. They also hook an OBD-II scanner up to your ECU, and check for codes. Any codes pop up, you lose the inspection sticker on the spot. As far as O2 simulators, I'm not sure, but if they aren't throwing codes or causing bad emessions, it shouldn't be a problem. Go to a garage/mechanic that knows you. Oh, and they are charging 2 times the original price, so about $35 a year for an inspection now... worse than registration.

if you read through the nys inspection laws it states that you cant be failed for your check engine light coming on if it doesnt involve a part of your emissions system...but you can be failed if the cel doesnt come on when the car is first started....obi is also right about not having the sniffer test in upstate ny..not yet anyways.....i've also heard that if you fail the inspection and the shop says it's going to cost more that 800.00 to makethe car pass the test you can get a one year waiver from the state to fix it....but you only get one you cant keep doing it from year to year.. i'm do in april worst comes to worst i'll "sell" it to my aunt in pa, get the 5k or less a year waiver and call it good!!

Ok guys, i thought i would put my 2 cents in. I am a service writer for a large Toyota dealership near Philly. Pre 1996 cars still get put on the rolling dyno, and get run through the full exhaust sensor testing. 1996 and up simply get an emissions computer hooked up directly to the cars on board diagnostic port. The most common reason a car will fail is due to a check engine light(should be called an emmissions light). The test can not be run if the check engine light is on. Even if the codes in the computer are reset, to temporarily shut off the light, it will not pass. There are readiness codes that are stored in the cars computer, and resetting the light resets those.
Also, even if you are emmissions exempt, your car still MUST undergo the normal safety inspection, and there is actually still a partial emissions test(basically just hooking it up to the pc to make sure everything is operational). That is why there is a charge for the emissions exemption, otherwise it would just be the cost of the sticker. Ok, sorry if i rambled, just thought i would share my knowledge on the subject.

It all depends on the area you're in as to what gets done . Pre-96 cars in MY area just get a visual inspection of certain components to make sure they're present & accounted for & they test your gas cap . They still "F" you for the emmisions inspection cost , not just the $2 for the sticker , however .
