Since they just added several counties in PA to the list of areas that need to be emissions inspected , I figured that I should post some websites for you unlucky guys (like me) that now have to deal with this . You should be able to find any info you need to know about emissions requirements on either of these websites .

www.drivecleanpa.state.pa.us

www.pavehiclenews.com

On the "pavehiclenews" website , you can also find other useful info , like TINT laws & such .

Not to sound relentless or anything, but I talked with my one of my dad's mechanics the other day (he own's a shop in lancaster co.) who is certified to do the emissions testing. For new cars like ours, its really not that big of deal. According to him the emissions aren't even tested. The machine hooks up to the car's computer and just makes sure everything is "there" and ok. I guess it looks for codes for burnt cats and what not. But anyway, as long as your computer isn't malfunctioning and you haven't messed with the cats too much, aftermarked exaust shouldn't be a problem unless the mechanic is a real prick

Unless you're running an untuned 3.0L hybrid swap with about every CEL in existence.

I've passed three years in a row with gutted precats. It's still barely even registering on the system (I say this with an inspection due in May).

While I feel sorry for those that fall under the new rule...but I've been putting up with PA's emission crap for about 15 years now...(it's good to see others feel our pain ). I just don't understand why it needs to cost 50 smackers...

DO NOT , whatever you do , tell them you have a 3.0 motor in there !!!!!!! YOU WILL NOT PASS , even with no codes ! By the letter of the law , the car cannot have a different engine in there that it didn't come with at the factory . Even with the '74-'84 test it must have the correct engine in there .

FYI - Shop around when you go to get your test . Look on that first website I posted to find prices & stuff for all the stations . I wasn't going to pay $45+ for a guy just to look at my gas caps & junk on my Jettas , so I found a guy doing it for $25 locally ... HE got my business (Werley's Exxon , BTW) . My SVT will also be going there (for it's exemption sticker - under 5,000 miles) in May . Only thing is , that will also cost me $25 . It sure beats $45+ for an exemption though .

Actually, that's not true. I asked the state DEP about that when I had my engine done. Their answer: "You have to pass the more stringent of the two tests, if the motors have different limits."

Essentially, unless you use a 95 2.5L OR a MY04 3.0 or newer, it doesn't matter. The standards changed in 96, and are changing again for 2004, but the 96-03 2.5 and 3.0 Duratecs use the same limits. (This only applies for PA.) The DEP quoted a specific code that was written exactly to deal with hybrid engines, like the one I have. I might have the email *somewhere*, but it's been over 2 years since I asked IIRC.

Then again, it doesn't matter if you live in OBD-II testing land. As long as you: 1) have passed all of the monitors (continuous AND non-continuous) AND 2) you don't have any DTC (Diagnostic trouble codes aka CEL) AND 3) you don't have any PTC (Pending Trouble Codes aka "I'm gonna be a CEL if this doesn't change"), you'll pass regardless of what year(s) engine(s) you have, because you aren't going on the sniffer anyway. Unless you fail the OBD-II check (as I understand the process).

Oh, and nothing disallows a motor other than OEM, as long as all of the original emissions devices are present, such as cats, all O2 sensors, EGR, blah blah. Which I happen to have (98 2.5 and 01 3.0 with all the original emission control devices present). On top of the fact that I pass the sniffer with flying colors anyway. FWIW, by the VIN the 2.5L HO engine comes up by default anyway.

I don't think that's 100% true from what I've heard (being in the industry) . If it's not the correct engine ... NFG . The only reason I even paid attention was the fact that I may (someday) do a motor swap in one of my Jettas . I wasn't happy . If they've already changed it , good , but from what I heard no-swappie . If you glance through the Auto-Locator (which I do weekly) , there all of a sudden a bunch of motor-swapped Hondas (& other stuff) for sale .

So true , but you don't want to divulge any more info than needed (was my point) .

I could say something silly ...

I will read more into the engine swap situation to say 100% , as soon as I get more time .

All the new counties have the easy test. A simple ODB and gas cap check. Pittsburgh and Philly still have it much worse. We have the dyno test where the cars get checked at 40mph.
I think John needs to get his bugs worked out before he visits a shop. Or he better know someone.
