Granted, I drive a Maxipad, but I think my experiences probably can apply. My car makes ~200fwhp/195+fwtq, has an open-diff, and weighs 3200lbs with me in it, and I've noticed that with my 17s and grippy W-rated tires, traction really isn't a problem assuming the surface I'm on is smooth, the weather isn't terribly cold, and the street isn't wet or covered with salt or dirt, etc. I can punch it in 1st at any sort of RPM and get a slight chirp of the tires and then grab 2nd and get a nice bark. Now if I put my stock 15" rims on which weigh the same as my 17s, traction becomes pretty limited. From a roll in 1st I can easily roast 2nd and get some pretty crazy spin into 2nd and then bark 3rd if I really try.

I think it all comes down to tires. Tires make or break your traction whether it be acceleration or deceleration.
