Hey here's a suggestion(i'm a MECP cert. tech too!) let me know what kind of music u listen to. that makes a diff in the kind of box and subs u wanna use. i need part #'s or specs to be more helpful than i can. i will say this--ported boxes are good for loose bass response(like rap music) and sealed are good for tight bass(like electronic music). I listen to both so i got a bandpass box--sealed in front and ported in back to combine the best of both worlds. just remember to get quality woofers cause bandpass boxes are not heat friendly! try audiobahn! good woofers and not too much $$ but u get what u pay for. make sure the inner box volume is compatible with the requirements for the woofer or brand dont mean diddley!! laugh

Dr. Boom,

First of all, welcome to the site. I've got a couple of comments to your post, though.

This really shouldn't be the case. Music is music regarless of the style. A good subwoofer should be able to play all types of music from Classical, to rap, to christmas music.

Basically, you have described a poorly designed ported sub and a properly designed sealed enclosure. There is nothing about a ported enclosure that necessarily make it looser. Although, there are a lot of ported boxes that are not designed correctly based on the drivers specs and end up sounding pretty crappy.

Again, a properly designed enclosure will sound great for all music. A bandpass box has some unique advantages over a sealed or a ported box, but one of them isn't that it is more versatile and combines the best of ported and sealed.

I don't agree with the first portion but I couldn't agree more with the part about making the box the right size. In car audio you rarely, if ever, get what you pay for unless you can find phenominal discounts.

Please don't take offense to this, it isn't meant to insult you, just clear some things up. smile

My Sony Xplod HU does have RCA outs and I'm am getting a really good deal on the sub. That one US Acoustics Amp someone suggested is more expensive than the Xplod Amp I'm planning on buying. Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for the ones I already have.

My friend just got an infinity perfect 12. It is the most amazingly loud and accurate sub i've ever heard in a sealed box. not to say that other's aren't louder or more accurate but the infinity would more than complete my system and should not be looked down upon or talked smack about. he only payed 160 for it too so it didn't cost that much more and looks a hell of alot better than most no-name subs.

That's quite simply because it's a better amp. wink

What are you looking to spend for a sub amp assuming you're just planning on running a single 12" Perfect?

That depends on the amp and the sub.

The Sony amp I'm assuming being mentioned is either the Sony XM-3001SXD or SM-6001GXD.

Either amp's output is actually 300x1 rms (continuous power) at 4ohms and 14.4V. 1000w (or 1200w for the 6001) is their max power rating, which IMO is by and far meaningless.

The 12" Perfect 4ohm sub is rated to handle 350w rms. I don't see the either amp overpowering the sub.

dnewma04,
i agree with your thoughts completely. i have a ported enclosure that was designed right and built better. it sounds very good, and ive done quite a few set ups. even had macdaddy's for myself. im not mecp but ive been around quite a few people who are. personally i use the ported box because i like the gain and control i gain over the center frequency. thats just me.

welcome to contour.org boom!

IMHO, a Coustic 400se would be great on that sub. 400x1 RMS @ 4ohm 14.4v. I'm running one to my Alps, and couldn't be happier. Go to www.800caraudio.com . Prices are pretty descent there. Good luck with whatever you choose.
