I'd look into when the latest versions of these detectors
were released / what's the latest firmware available (the V1
can be reprogrammed).

I own a V1 and it kinda worries me that all the development
for it in the last 6 months was the appearance of a plastic
carrying case... and there's no new firmware in a long-long
while (I gotta check it out now though).

Mike seems to have been slowing down.

Other than that, I'm mostly satisfied with the V1. A year
ago it was definitely the best I could get for my money.

I wouldn't worry about the range of detection so much anymore, even middle of the road detectors have more range than is useful. The important points are discretion of false signals, and features that lend themselves to your own discretion of signals.

I have yet to see a review that gives proper credit to Valentine for the directional arrows. The information you get from the arrows is indispensible in determining whether a particular alert is important or not.

Granted, $400 is a lot to swallow for a detector, as even i don't have one (I've got a cheap Cobra unit). The best defense against unwarranted speeding tickets is being very attentive to what is going on around you, and don't drive at unsafe speeds.

Back from the dead? Nah, just up to my eyeballs in the ratrace...

I ordered a 2004 BMW 325Ci, Mystic blue (gray interior) with sport package, manual, leather, cold weather package, xenon headlights, and the Harman-Kardon stereo. It has to be custom made in Germany because NOBODY (and I mean NOBODY) in the whole country had what I wanted. Try buying a luxury-sports car without a moonroof sometime. The sales people will think you're nuts.

Once I get it, the OEM tires are outta here (for Pilot Sport A/S'es?) and a fuzz buster is going in...

Both the V-1 and the Escort have a money-back guarantee, buy both, return one.

Me, I have a V1, while it's close between it and the escort in the front, the v1 is drastically better in the back and has things like the directional arrows nobody else has.

I live in MN with those nasty troopers and My $90 Whistler from Best Buy works great,I have had 3 of them over the past 7 years and they have all been great at avoiding tickets. Though I dont rely on it, its just there to keep me in check when the super troopers are at it. I could have avoided a $300 ticket back when I was 18 if I would have had one, not knowing there was a trooper following behind me a mile back.

Radar detectors are a waste of money! As police radar has a fancy on/off toggle switch, which simple means by the time your detector picks up the radio signals that are bouncing around its far too late........just a thought!

When they hit the cars in front of you, any half decent radar detector can pick up the signal with enough time for you to correct your speed.

And for fooling laser, it can be done. A black Corvette and 4th gen T/A with no plate is almost impossible to get a speed from a laser gun. Black paint absorbs all light including laser beams. Also, you can drastically reduce the distance for when a laser gun will grab a reading by using lighting. Two or more high powered lights ( like offroad lights) will produce enough garbage ultraviolet lighting to confuse the laser gun when it's trying to recieve the laser beam it shot at your car. I know driving around with off road lights on is illegal, but if you put ultra violet filters on them, they look like they are off, but they will still be able to send out the lighting needed to confuse the laser guns. This has been tried and tested by a major car magazine with amazing results.
