I did find the MASSIVE leak on the UIM, back bank, passenger side.
Following the FAQ on pulling it apart ..... any extra suggestions?
Jeff
Just did this last week on my 98 V-6 using the FAQ and the shop manual as my guides.
My original symptom was a CEL with P0171 and P0174 codes. Verified intake manifold leak with spray cleaner.
Get a replacement PCV valve while you are at. Mine fell apart when I disassembled the tubing. AutoZone EV302, IIRC.
Install the TB gasket with the semi-rounded side UP. Don't ask me how I found THAT out.
I found that it was not necessary to remove the fuel injector rail from the LIM unless you plan on replacing injector o-rings (I didn't).
You will need a set of the quick disconnect tools to separate the fuel rail lines from the supply/return lines. I already had these on hand. The plastic $10 set from AutoZone is adequate.
I had a heck of a time getting the engine to start when I put it back together. It required at least 30 prime cycles of the key to get it to fire, then a lot of cranking to get fuel flowing and for the engine to actually run. I did not expect this and don't believe it was normal, but the engine has run perfectly since I got it going.
I also cleaned the IAC and got to meet Mr Moose for the first time ever when I started the car back up. The TH fix put Mr Moose most of the way back out to the woods.
I also managed to break one of the nipples off the EVR solenoid. Found a replacement at the junkyard for $3.
So far, so good. I just returned the car to the wife to drive 20 minutes ago and she hasn't called yet reporting any problems.

Well thanks everyone for all the tips, hints, and suggestions. I just finished my minor surgery on the patient (UIM gasket) and all is well, the patient is breathing fine and already running up and down the halls.

Congratulations!! Great to hear the hard starting & rough idle is gone. The loss of brake boost must have been a most worrisome issue.
Enjoy the V-6 power!
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Use caution went using silicon rubber, it will coat the O-2 sensors if it used around the induction system. Aways use the Sensor safe type, however it does have the same sticking type properties. Paul

Just wanna say,
I love you guys. Wifes car started acting up (98 Mercury Mystique) Same problems as listed here. If not for this site I would have never figured it out. I would have never geussed it to be a intake gasket. Problem solved and not too bad of a repair either. Replaced upper and lower. Brakes are back, miss is gone, car is running like a CHAMP. Cant say thank you guys enough. Much easier doing this than changing out her alternator like I have had to do twice.
Thanks,
Mike

Glad to hear that someone else was able to benefit from this thread.
I second your comments Mike. This site and the ones I frequent for my Talons have saved me probably thousands over the last couple of years in repair costs.
Kudos to all the Automotive Forum webmasters of the world.
Great job and keep up the good work.
Obviously the forums wouldn't be what they are without the "elders" who continue to help out those lacking in knowledge but who are eager to learn and pass on their experience too.
Wow, practically a love letter , but I do appreciate these sites.
