I just got a letter from Ford saying that they will replace that part for free at the dealership. To be quite honest, I have no clue what it even is. Is it worth driving all the way to the dealership to have 'heater blower resistor' replaced on a Ford Contour '97?

First off, the blower motor resistor is what allows the switch to give you variable fan speeds for your heat, defrost, and air conditioning.
Second off, it might be worth replacing. Your blower resistor has a greater potential for failure. Your heat will come out at one speed, high. If your dealer isn't that far away, and you can do without the car for 30 to 45 minutes, then do it.
This is just my humble opinion, if your confident that it won't fail, then don't waste the time to have it replaced. In my experience, though, if FORD recalls it, they have a reason. Failure of this part seems to be pretty common, if that helps you answer your question.

Not just high... mine was stuck in low for a month. from 24dec02 until febuary sumthin of 03. And that was a COLD frickin winter. I'm telling you... I was loving it when I got my heater back. being on low with snow all over the car and the windows defrosting as soon as you move the dial (because it wasn't high enough to get the moisture out of the air) is not f'in cool. Get the recall done. Best thing I did at the time.

You cant get it done unless it is broken. I tried to have it done but they said it has to broken first, same goes for wiring harness, front coil springs, and that other part of the heating system under recall.

I replaced mine but have another question? My car only has low and med-low and no med-high or high... I took the dash controls apart and the switch and the harness to the fan speed switch is melted and corroded? Would they replace this? Could this be a fire hazard????
To me its faulty and I shouldn't have to pay for the repair? Any input?
Thanks Spankey

that is how mine was when I gave it to them. they fixed it for free. They had the car for a day when I was on duty. Got it back and it's been alright ever since... well except for the fuse box melting but thats another story.

What is the recall number?
If the recall number has an "E" or and "S" in the middle, they are to be performed without waiting for failure. If the middle character in the recall number is an "M" or a "B" then it may be a recall that cannot be performed unless the part fails.
There have been both types of recalls on the heater blower resister on Contiques.

Recall # is 01S22 and the impression I got from the letter is that I don't have to wait for the part to break, but that I can have it serviced anytime. Anyhow, I'll give them a call to find out for sure before I actually drive to the dealership. Thanks

Mine broke in the dead of summer. Thankfully, only high was working. I guess that is better than the alternatives. The part cost like $8 from Ford, and I installed it myself in like 5 minutes. Super easy.
