To me, all those repairs to the 'Tour seem rather minor and all relatively easy to do yourself.

For half the price of a truck payment you can probably do all the work on the 'Tour.

I wouldn't dump it though. t's worth practically nothing and If nothing else it keeps miles off the truck.

You can remove the return line where it connects back to the reservoir. It may get a little messy. You can connect a longer section of tubing to the return line, to make it easier to catch the old fluid as it is being dumped out.

So remove the return hose that is at the Bottom of reservoir and attach a hose to collect the spent fluid and poor in new to replenish and keep the reservoir full? I do this till it flows clean. How many quarts does it take to clean out the old?

By removing the bottom hose, the one that comes from the pump, does this cause the reservoir to leak out. Not sure how it circulates? Maybe the top(smaller) hose is the return?

Thanks

BTW I lived in Oklahoma City for 10 years(grew up there)

Your the only other person I've heard of who's power steering "hoots" or "mooses". Definitely not the low on power steering fluid sound. Sounds almost identical to the IAC hoot here.

Let me know if that fixes it.

Yeah that happened to my Contour as well. You would only hear it if you hit a bump right? Happened in about May, and then a shop fixed it for free for me, and it hasnt came back.

It's been about a year and half since I flushed mine, so my memory may not be exactly right, but IIRC, the bottom, larger hose is the one that goes to the power steering pump. Do not disconnect this one, as you will need it to keep supplying fluid to the pump. IIRC, the top, smaller hose is the one that returns the fluid from the steering mechanism back to the reservoir. This is the one that you will disconnect. When the pump is running, the old fluid will flow out of this line, and you can collect the used fluid by inserting the end of this hose into an empty container. Since this hose is fairly short, it may be easier to splice an extra length of hose on to the original hose, just to have more hose to work with.

You wil also need to plug the disconnected fitting coming out of the reservoir, to keep the reservoir from leaking. However, there will be no pressure coming out of the reservoir fitting, so it doesn't take much of anything to plug this opening.

If you have a couple of friends that you can borrow for a few minutes, the easiest way would be to disconnect the return lose at the reservoir, have one friend insert and hold the end in an empty container, while you hold your finger over the fitting on the reservoir and pour new fluid into the reservoir, while another friend starts and stops the car and turns the steering wheel.

I hope my memory serves me correctly about which hose does what, but that is the general picture. You're probably going to spill some fluid, no matter what you do. As far as the amount of fluid needed, I don't recall the exact amount, but it's not a large amount. Probably 1-2 quarts will be sufficient to flush out all of the old fluid.

The car is up on jack stands now and has been for a few days. I hope to drive it sometime on Monday. I hope moving those straps fixed the clunking sound. I can see why they did it for free. Once I saw the problem it only took a few seconds with a long screw driver to push back into place.

OK, great! Some who has heard the same sound I have! It sounds alot like the IAC moosing but a little higher pitch. And on a bad day I can be sitting still and move wheels a little to the left or right and just make it sing. The worst for me is a long sweeping off ramp were it gets in just the right place and hoots for the hole turn. Sound comes and goes.

I will let you know if that fixes it.
