I desperately need help with my computer. It is taking forever to load up and then it runs very slow. IT literaaly took me over 40 minutes to get online. I can type a whole paragraph before it even shows up. I have a HP 7935. 1.3Ghz processor, 256mb RAM, and windows XP. Latest thing I did to the computer is add on a vidoe card, but I removed it, and it's still not working right. The computer was working fine earlier today. Please help me. Should I just do a system restore and hope for the best? Or is this a hardware problem? This is very frustrating. TIA.

Your machine ought to be running very nicely with those specs. Have you checked to make sure that you're all clean with Spyware/Adware? Ad-aware, SpyRemover (formerly Spy-Bot), and HijackThis (read the directions with this one) are all great tools. I would also update your virus definitions and run a scan. That doesn't sound like hardware problem, more of a software issue. My fiance had a similar problem and as I was digging through her system found that she was FULL of stuff. Now she's running just as fast as ever. Her machine is only 800mhz with 128MB RAM.
Hope that helps some!

Normally my computer is pretty peppy. Earlier all I did was play GTA 3, no downloads. It was previously clean of all ad-ware. Even when I had lots of ad-ware on it, it wasn't this slow. IT is extremely slow. Nothing I have typed has even showed up so far on the screen. It's slower than my old 200mhz computer we had. ACtually I think it's in my bro's room, and I may just have to hook it up to get my internet "fix" for the night. Something is wrong, but I don't know what. This sucks.

About a year ago I had a similar problem; I just said f*** it and reinstalled Windows, eating the resulting data loss. I wish I could offer a better solution...

Look in the task manager, see what's eating up all the CPU time.

Remember, it's doing this from the second I turn the computer on, XP takes forever to load up. With task manager open,it appears task manager is using the cpu time (70-90%) and explorer is using 5-20%. It takes about 20 minutes just to get to the desktop from the time I turn the computer on.

you could have a fialing hard drive...hit esc or tab during the bootup HP screen to see if there are any SMART errors or something...also run a chkdisk to see if there is anything like bad sectors. Oh, and the BIOS might have some sort of diagnostic, and if not check the HP message boards, there usually are some built in diagnostics you can run with a few keystrokes to check for bad hardware.

How do I run a chkdisk? I can't really check the HP forums, I can barely post on here, trying to get to a different site would be hell for me.

When your computer starts push F8 and select safe mode and see if that help speed up your boot time. Try doing a restore at a point before the video card install and see if that helps. There may still be part of the video card driver hiding on your system. Did you switch from a Geforce to an ATI or the other way around? I had a big slow down when I switched from one brand to the other.I had to go into safe mode and uninstall/reinstall the video drivers. How full is your hard drive? A drive that's getting full will slow things up.

Let me guess, you installed an NVidia based card....?
There is a utility called detonator destroyer that removes the NVidia driver files & references - some get left behind on an un-install.
I have two GF 4 MX 440 cards and its a PITA to install/upgrade drivers. I've been tempted to change over to ATI products, but I've heard they can be just as bad. I may try them anyway, just to keep NVidia honest.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
