I don't replace mine either; they are rechargeable. Unlike Apple, Archos had the forsight to use a standard battery size (AA) for their players. Much like other decisions Apple has made, they sometimes only seem to want to screw over their most loyal customers (I used to be one). That, and the ridiculous prices they charge for their products has kept me on the "non-buying" side of the Apple fence for over 13 years.

The Apple IIGS is dead! Long live the Apple IIGS!

Yeah, I'll admit I'm very bitter. My parents bought an Apple IIGS for Christmas back in 1989. At the time, it was the one of the most advanced personal computers out there, and was the best Apple had to offer. They claimed it would be their flagship product for years to come, which was one of the reasons we went with Apple. Then, four months later, they announced they were discontinuing the IIGS along with all software production. We bought a $3000 paperweight and couldn't return it. That's when I realized that the PC architecture was more open and not restricted by one single company. I haven't looked back since. I can build a comparable computer for half the price (hell, my Archos 20GB cost me $270 when the 20GB iPod cost over $500), so what does Apple offer that I can't get from a PC?

EDIT: I will concede that I'm rooting for Apple with the whole iTunes thing. If my mp3 player could play AAC files I'd be all over that.

well, you did get screwed. but man, that was 1989 for crying out loud. you sure do know how to hold a grudge though ahah. i think the computer world is alot more stable now, and people can now know and anticipate when computer architecture will change. i think you are right about the ipods though...they are kind of pricey (btw, the 20 gb is 400...). i think there may be a price drop after MWSF 2004 though, along with the introduction of "mini" ipods which will be 1gb - 4 gb and will be cheaper...

- beautiful computers
-a extremely stable OS. we recently switched to OS X from OS9, and our 17" imac has not crashed in over 4 months.
-it just works

That's my favorite part about Apples... everything is made by one company, so it all works together... you're not trying to run an Adobe program on a Microsoft operating system on a Compaq built computer, connected to the internet via a Netgear router... youre running Adobe software on an Apple OS on an Apple computer and connecting to the internet via Apple's Airport router... there are far less compatibility issues!

I can get a really nice Lian Li case for about $80-$100, but some of those Apples sure are purdy...

I don't use windows, so my OS is just as stable is OSX. From my "always-on" computer:

hetfield@steelwill hetfield $ uptime
14:58:45 up 421 days, 18:28, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
hetfield@steelwill hetfield $

The last reboot was October of 2002, and that was because I had to take out some hardware. I can't crash my OS unless I purposefully break it Oh, yeah, I don't have to pay for any of my software, either, and its all legal, too. Except for games which I do buy since no one is giving those away

I've had my 10gb iPod since July, and have been loving it. It's amazing how your life changes when you have access to all your music at any given moment. I've been big on Apple since Windows 95, I got a Mac Classic for free back then, and I've been hooked ever since. Though I'm more of a portable guy. My PowerBook G4 has been awesome, especially with 10.3 installed. I've been using PowerBooks and iBooks for years, my first PowerBook was a 180. I loved that thing to bits. It never let me down, nor have any of these wonderful little PowerBooks.

My PC can be just as beautiful as any Apple tower. Just have to buy the right case.

Extremely stable OS... XP hasn't crashed since I installed it, over a year ago.

"It just works..." so does my PC, and runs more available apps and games.

Not bashing Apple... I have a few users at work, and have fewer complaints and questions from the PC users... that includes the OSX users.
