The car is in good condition for its age...he is the original owner but the thing has been sitting for a while so I know it would need some work but it would be worth it i'm sure. I am thinking in a year and a half when I graduate I may be able to get it from him.
I have found that edmunds and kbb do not accurately reflect prices of cars that have "collector" value. Most recent example is my mom sold her pristine condition 1986 volvo 240dl, which had 115k miles and the edmunds value was $1500. She went through the volvo dealership and they found a buyer for $6k, and get this, they couldnt believe they were getting the car that cheap. They told her the actual value for the condition her car was in was $8k, and if she held out longer she would get that. I do not know how they figured that out, but the people had apparently been scouring the internet to find something similar. My mom just was happy to get rid of it.
Also, cars that are restored, really well maintained, etc...edmunds would not give you the right price. Maybe ebay or a mustang board would give you a better idea as to its value.
