If the bumper is dented I would think the damage would be major. My Contour got rear ended and the bumper flexed back out so that no damage was noticeable. My trunk would not open and close easily. There was over $1000 in damage behind the bumper. I would not feel guilty about having them pay for repairs. It was careless of them to run into your car. Have they offered to pay for the damage?
