Just hit 100 thousand miles in my 98 SE. The water pump was replaced at about 90K and I just had a power steering hose replaced (430 dollars should have had the whole power steering system replaced!) and its going to need a tranny rebuild (or not. some tell me it'll be fine).

What kind of things can I expect to encounter in the next year or so? Is there a thread that discusses high mileage contours?

Is a tune-up an easy enough task for some college student who changes his own oil and rotates his own tires? I'm kind of afraid to go to the dealer, simply because I want to pick out what goes in there when I get the tune-up done.

Any info much appreciated!

Wheel bearings will go, if they haven't already. Radio antenna will quit going up and down. CD player will stop loading CDs. Rear suspension will squeak like crazy. All part of the joy of owning a high-mileage Contique.

At 100K, the plugs are changed and all the fluids flushed. It's doable by a college student with some tools and the will.

If ya want to do a tune up it is going to cost you big. The plugs/wires in Contours are Platinum means big bucks, like $65.00 a set for a four cylidner, add $80 for new wires, also put on a PCV valave/airfilter/fuel filter, maybe O2 sensor.

$430 for a hose?

I have a 95 and I've spent $300 in the last year to keep it running. Since you have 98 you can expect 2 to 4 years of trouble free driving, then it'll become more and more of a fix-er-upper, but that's far away.

I love the Tours since they are a drivers car, made in America (besides the Stratus/Cirrus). But they no longer make the Tours and each year they get farther and farther from daily driving.........

But these days , there are no cars made to last past 150K, those that do are due to the love of their owners.....

Pssshhh. Try owning a SHO .

I sure am glad I still have warranty on my car, though

When I replaced my plugs I bought Motorcraft double-platinum for about $5.00 each at Pep Boys. The wires were the 9mm set (in blue) from BAT for $37.50.

And for the record, my Mystique was built in Mexico.

Labor. The mechanic told me he had to remove the engine cradle to get to it. And it was the 200 dollar part. There's a couple of 20-40 dollar hoses in the system as well, but I'm not sure how much the pump costs. I think the water pump was around 200, altogether.

The Tranny is an MTX 75, btw. I'd like to have it work well again b/c the car is still a blast to drive. I read the threads about the Getrag. I'd love to have 6th, but I guess it's really not feasable.

Would'nt wheel bearings be taken care of at the next brake job? Or is there another set of bearings that I'm not considering?

I just keep coming up with more questions How is the brake job on an ABS system different from non-ABS?
