What if you just take the cover off the IMRC box, and find out which wire powers the motor for the secondaries to open, and splice the light into that?

Just because the motor is getting power doesn't mean the secondaries are opening. A mechanical switch is the only way to gurantee they are open.

I'm pretty sure that there is a mechanical switch in the IMRC control box--otherwise, how does the computer know that the secondaries aren't opening to give the error code for it?

But from the IMRC box there is a cable that runs to the LIM. Even if the motor is working fine and pulling the cable, it doesn't mean the other end of the cable is doing what it's supposed to, and it doesn't mean the secondary linkage is still attached and functioning.

Again, you need to have a mechanical switch that is hit my the secondary linkage to verify 100% that the secondaries are functioning.

Someone did do this and IIRC, they were from MEG. I'm sure Steventrace or Percey Bigun will know who it was or you can do post on MEG. Also, do a search in the archives, I think it's been about that long ago, last spring or so.
