Has that motor been opened up, i.e. the notorious head gasket problem
To answer that..NO...neva experienced the Head gasket problem..i did howeva replace the whole engine at 223,000 for throwing a rod...my biggest problem with my Grand Am is frame weakening but otherwise it still goes strong..and no i'm not afraid to run it against a Maxima or for that matter my SVT...SVT looks betta tho and at this point is still VERY stock

So the new motor has 63K on the clock and the original went 223K, thats pretty good. Did you buy it brand new? Also, how about the tranny, ATX or MTX and how long has that lasted

Engine was remanufactured unit from ATK...not nearly as strong as the original motor...it has a manual tranny replaced it almost 2 years ago because of worn synchros...third started and after a year and a half of babying her the other gear start scraping..replaced with a used tranny with 60k miles

There was a supercharged maxima('00) around here and that thing could really mooooove, not sure what he was gettin' on the quarter, but i've seen it pull away from me and leave me thinkin'
I'd be more fearful of the 95-99s than the 00+s. The 95-99s are just as quick as the 00-01s and the mods available for the 95-99s are far more effective at making gains. The quickest and fastest Maximas are the 4th gens (95-99s). The quickest NA Maxima is a 96 5 speed running 13.6@101mph on slicks and 13.9@98 on street tires. He has the same mods as myself. Then there are the turbo and SC 4th gens that are running anywhere from 11.9@117-12.4@119mph to mid 13s depending on mods and tires.
The 02+ Maximas are pretty brutal with 14.5-14.8@92-95mph being common for stock. Some have gotten as good as 14.2 stock. Mod wise, they don't seem to do as well and most typically modded 02+ 5th gens are getting 14.4-14.6s. There is an auto 02 running 13.7@99mph with just a CAI, y-pipe, b-pipe, and slicks, but I think his track is a bit quicker than most because he is about .6 quicker than any other 02+ Maxima auto.
