EDIT: I should clarify a little... clogged filters and screens can definitely cause a fuel starvation condition, but so can failing fuel pumps. Since he has already run it out of gas, its very possible the pump was damaged. As the fuel level drops and the rpms increase, the pump has to work harder (and hotter) which can cause the hesitation.
