Call the dealer back and tell them to READ THE FREAKIN WARRANTY!

The answer you were given is bull$hit!

Sounds like a lazy (or un-informed) dealer's service writer. This is NOT a rare occurance. My buddy who works as a tech in a Ford store (he did mine) indicates this is a very common failure.

I second that... Take it to the dealer and tell them you scanned a P0420. They can't charge you a dime!!! Not even the diagnostics fee.

Make certain that the P0420 is still there. If you clear it, they will have no proof in the computer of the code.

If you cleared the code, wait for it to come back.

I cleared the code. It's been about a week and I haven't had it come back yet. I've driving in the same conditions every work day since. Still hasn't returned.

Could this be from another reason? I have 76700 miles, I hope it doesn't come back on at 80001!

Yea, any dealer that says they won't replace the cats is in violation of federal law. Get out the warranty book, if you still have it, and it says right there that cats, PCM, and I think one other thing are covered 8/80. If they refuse to do anything, contact ford, and tell them you want action immediately, and a free rental for the time of the service. The $100 fee they charge will be charged to warranty after they pull the code. You will owe absolutely NOTHING for having your cats replaced. And the fact that the dealer says 'its very rare' is complete BS. In the past 18 months I've worked at this dealer, we've had at least 10 V6 Tours come in with that code, and they all got free cats. This is in a place where Contours are few and far between
