What is the determining factor in how may O2 sensors the contour has???

I believe the 2.0L has three and the 2.5L has four. Mine showed a CEL several weeks ago that was diagnosed to be a defective Bank 1, Sensor 2 problem. Before buying a replacement I crawled under there and found that the wiring that ran to the sensor was almost touching the exhaust pipe. Nothing was melted or damaged but it was close. I rerouted that with a ziptie and after about 15 minutes of driving the CEL went out and has never come back.

1. Year/version of OBD system. The 95 has sensors only in front of the first cat converters(s). The 96-on uses a sensor in front of the cat to monitor the engine's mixture. There is a second sensor after the cat to monitor the effectiveness of the cat.

2. Number of cylinder banks. A Zetec has one bank, the V-6 has two. There is one cat built into the exhaust manifold for each bank.

Therefore:

95 only I-4 has one sensor
95 only V-6 has two sensors
96-on I-4 has two sensors
96-on V-6 has four sensors.

The last cat on the V-6 is not monitored in any way. I don't know if the I4 has a second cat, I've never looked at one.

Hope this clears up the continuous fog, misinformation, and confusion regarding this issue.

Steve

Quick question...I have been having problems with my O2 sensor (check engine light keeps coming on), how hard is it to replace? Can I do it myself?

i'd say find out which o2 sensor it is first but i didn't think it was too hard to do. just jack the car up high enough to get under there, be sure to use jack stands (im sounding like my dad).

make sure u have enough light and it can actually be done if u have the right length wrenches and can get ur hands in there. but u can always get the correct o2 sensor socket from autozone for just a deposit.

bank 2 sensors are definately easier but the upstream sensor on bank 1 will be the hardest.

good luck
