Not necessarily. The pre-98 SE's had the Duratec standard and the post-98 SE's had it as an option. My SE has the Duratec.
SE was available with the V6 engine only until 2000 when the SE became the only model besides the SVT. A Zetec SE did not exist until 2000.

I used to own a '98 Contour SE with the zetec. I believe that it was originally part of a rental fleet or something.

True about the 2000 model, sorry about that (The 2000 SE was a rental fleet model; the SE Sport came with the V6 although I believe the V6 was standard with the Sport for 2000), but after 1998.5 the V6 was only an option on the SE; it came with the Zetec otherwise.

I sent him an E-mail as well.
By now you must have been told that the car you auctioned off is not an SVT and does not have an SVT engine. Many at the Contour Enthusiast Group have viewed the auction and you are the laughing stock of the forum.
I suggest that you correct this fraud with the buyer and make apologies to us at CEG. We intend to make sure the the buyer is aware that this car is not as represented.
If you respond to this, let me know which state and community you live in so that I can contact your DMV and district attorney. You may think this is funny, but it is not.

This is probably correct. It may have happened before 2000. I'm certain that it did not happen before 1998.5 and even then it was probably very uncommon until 2000.
