On my '95 2.0L Contour, the idle is very low, especially after it warms up. I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires and ran several fresh tanks of fuel through it. The engine runs very smooth and crisp off idle, but the curb idle is very low, and has stalled a couple of times when most of the accessories are on. I understand that the IAC may be the culprit, but don't want to start hanging parts randomly.........Any Help???????
thanks,
tj

Have you cleaned the MAF or checked the PCV system?

There are several posiblilities here. Vacuum leaks and cam timing will both affect idle speed and quality, as well as the pcv system and MAF condition. The PCV system is monitored (all air going through the system first goes through the MAF) so unless there is a hole in a line, idle should be unaffected. You need to hook it up to a scanner capable of reading PID data and look at RPM verses RPMDES and see if there is a significant difference. If there isn't, then it is idling where the pcm commands it to. Look also at PSP and see if it changes states with steering wheel rotation. Check ACCS and a/c compressor operation. happy hunting!

The IAC can be cleaned... but I would start by taking a clean rag and wiping the crud out of the throttle body... do not use anything sharp to clean it. Open the throttle by hand.. wrap the rag around something that can reach in that far and wipe out the residue...

Jake, I've been suffering the same symptoms. Too low idle (had to help it along with my right foot.) If you GENTLY let it down to idle itself, the engine MIGHT hold 500 rpm. SO I removed the Idle Air Control valve (the lower bolt is a bit of a PITA) and I cleaned the inside with good ole carb cleaner. Than sprayed it with WD-40. Checked the resistance (9.5 Ohms--well within the range specified by Haynes manual) I wanted to do the funtional test (apply 12 volts to pins to see if solenoid moves the valve) but the pins are so close together, I didn't want to short anything. I put it back in (bottom bolt a PITA even moreso), reconnected the battery, and turned the key. Well the rpm went immediately to about 1350, then slowly came down as the engine warmed up. Eventually settled at 900 rpm approx. This was a cold start ( it was about 5 degrees C outside), and the car did what it was supposed to do. I was very happy. What I'm saying is: start with something as easy as cleaning the IAC valve and you just might surprise yourself. GT Ross
