I have a 98.5 CSVT with 65k on the odo and the car consumes about 1 qt of oil between oil changes. I have been using Mobil 1 5w-30 exculsively since new, and I am curious to know if this is normal for Ford's, or if I should be concerned. My previous car was a 91 Nissan SE-R, with numerous mod's, including Mobil 1, and it newer leaked or burned a drop of oil, right up to when I got rid of it, with 96k on the odo.
Thanks in advance, Lee Alvarez

On either of my Duratecs I lose almost no oil between changes (at least not enough to make any difference on the dipstick). Do you think its burning or leaking? A leak could be as simple as replacing the drain plug. Do you see any smoke from the tailpipes?
Beer is my Gatorade.

Mine has lost a quart of oil between changes (5K) since I drove it off the lot with less than 10 miles on it. I can go about 2500 miles before I notice it dropping on the stick a bit. Like I said, it has been this way ever since new with no leaks. I do downshift a lot and I have heard this contributes to oil consumption.

First, no the car does not leak oil, so I have to assume that it is burning oil, however, it's not enough to make the car smoke, or I would have noticed.
I do do a lot of downshifting, where I am matching rev's, so I guess that may be contributing to the consumption.
And yes, it's consumed oil since new off the lot.

I always over fill about 1/2 a quart. I have an oil accumulator and a pressure guage. I burn off that 1/2 quart at about the time it's time for a change, about 3500 miles. I also do burn oil when I take the rpm up past 6k(rare), but I don't have a cat so you see alot more then just oil coming out the exhaust.

try out 10w 30 instead of the 5w 30...thicker oil is less consumption...after your engine wears it is necesary to start upping on the viscosity or you will burn/develop leaks. I use 10w 30 in mine and have 73k on it...no oil consumption.

Not a good ideal. Both of these oils would be the same viscosity at operating temperature. The difference is that you would not be getting as much oil flow to the bearings at start up and during warm up.
Also, 1 quart in 3,000 miles is nothing to worry about. It is uncommon with the Duratec, but it doesn't hurt anything.
It may not hurt to experiment with different brands of oil. Some brands are more volatile than others.

bigjim's right instead of 10w30 y not try something like 5w40 thats thicker at operating temp and wont hurt engine on start up
