I have searched and searched and can't find anything on this. I have a 2000 Contour SE Sport with the factory AM\FM CD player and factory speakers. Sometimes I get a ticking sound, like a ch-ch-ch-ch (always four or five in a row), out of one of or all the speakers - I can't really tell where it is coming from, but it only happens when the stereo is on so it has to be something to do with it. It is rather annoying and appears to be quite random in occurence - I haven't been able to tie any one or more conditions to when it happens other than the stereo is always on.

TIA,

My 1999 with the stock speakers and cassette did the same thing. Turns out there was a loose ground in the steering column that was causing random noises, in groups of five. I had the loose ground fixed, then I ripped out the factory crap cassette and speakers and replaced them. I would highly suggest you do the same if you care about your sound. As for the problem, if it only happens in F.M. it may be you're trying to pull in a weak station (our stereos suck at this) If it happens all of the time, then I'd say it's some type of electrical interference, and I'd have the dash grounds checked.

This is a long shot, but if you have a Nextel phone, there is a 98% guarantee that it's your culprit.

Try it out. Have someone call your phone (assuming it's Nextel) while you're in the car with the radio on. If you get a ch-ch-ch-ch in the speakers, you'll be able to stop going crazy.

The only other logical explanation I have, (again a long shot) is if you have the stereo on AM and your turn signal is on at the same time--you'll get a very similar speaker noise then.

This is also true of the Nextel phones when they are trying to search for a signal (when the green light turns red, and it is searching to regain the signal, then it pops like that.. My division in the Navy, where I was stationed, issued 25 of the I700plus models, and they ALL did that.. VERY annoying when multiplied by 25...

Well I do have a Nextel, but thats not the problem because it does it when I don't have the nextel on me. I guess I'll see if I can trace down any loose grounds.

Does anyone know where the radio grounds to? Somewhere under the dash or under the hood? Thanks again.
