Yeah, me too.  I don't know any technical details but I know AM reception is much more prone to picking electrical and engine noise. I'm trying to figure out if there is anything simple that can be done to combat it.

Well, I guess my original question still stands; should I turn up the gain on my amp to its optimum level & simply live with the AM engine noise?

If it were me, I would change it back to it's optimum setting, especially if the noise is still there anyway. At least you get the benefit of better CD and FM tuner performance.
