Well that's the question. Anyone know? I'm leaning towards RWD being faster, just harder to launch correctly.

With the same power and same type of car? And basically same tires and wheels? AWD will launch faster, but after that RWD has the upper hand.

All things being equal, I'd say the grip generated by 4 tires being driven than just two would give the AWD car a definite advantage in launching ability.

Given similar horsepower figures, it seems the AWD would have greater drivetrain loss.

Yes, but as long as it's not some really low powered vehicle, it'll launch better. I said after the launch RWD has upper hand because of the drivetrain loss. But it's better to actually get traction than spin when launching. Though if you only have like 130hp , than RWD would be faster,, but once you exceed how much grip the RWD tires can get, than AWD will launch faster, but be slower once going.

AWD is easier to launch than RWD
RWD is better for a drag racer, as you can put on some massive slicks that wont even spin with 1000hp/tq going to them!

ooo they'll spin if u dump the clutch at a high enough rpm.

if u know how to launch, I'd say AWD...if you don't then spinning all 4 tires will get u no better launch then a RWD vehicle. take a look at the Pagoni Zonda (AWD) vs the Lamborghini Murcielago (RWD) vid...whoa

That Zonda was bada$$. The reason I started this thread is someone here at work has a Mazda truck with a Chevy 4.3L Vortec in it. He's done alot to the truck. He's tubbed it, got nice fat tires on the rear and skinnies on the front. He's done some work to the motor, though not alot. A friend of his challenged him to a race with a WRX. Not sure if it's the STI or not. I doubt it is. He basically thought the WRX would launch faster. And I think it would against his truck, but figured in general RWD would be better. I'm rethinking that whole thing now. BTW, with the gearing he has in his truck, it's pretty fast off the line. And he's very good with motors and building cars. Hell, he's got a Chevy motor in a Mazda!

On a real hard lauch, the front wheels are barely touching the pavement. On a car with serious HP, real wheel drive is faster and lauches better because 2WD is lighter. Also, wheel spin is not necessarily your enemy. Wheel spin allows your motor to get nigher RPM/ Higher HP range sooner. You just don't want too much spin. Of course, right now, AWD launched better in 12" of snow
