I wouldnt call it a "POS". It looks to be a very well engineered compact car, which will offer class-leading driving dynamics. (The current focus is regarded as the industry standard, and this one will raise the bar! ) Plus you have more powerful and refined engines - probably the old focus' largest shortcoming.

Styling is the only real negative here. It's not bad looking, just not attractive and "cool" like the 3. It's still alot better than the GM small cars - the Ion (barf) and the crappy, dated sunfire. And more interesting than the boring civic or corolla. It should do well IMO.

Also keep in mind that the 3 in the picture, with DVD navigation and such, will be priced around $23,000 Current focus pricing tops around $20,000 for an SVT model, with the ZX3 hatch starting as low as $13,000. It's more of a value oriented car whereas the 3 is more upscale and hip.

Still, I'm rooting for the 3

Contour owners call a Focus a POS, but then the Contour was never "recommended" by Consumer Reports. And, they totally ignore the engineering improvements, just dissing it for headlights or dash vents.

Sure, it would be great if there was a 2nd genration Contour, but life goes on.

The '98-'00 was the same chassis and bodyshell as 95-7, so it really is the same platform, CDW27. In Europe, the Mondeo got updated from CDW27, but we didn't get that generation.

The 2006 Futura could be called the "3rd generation".

The 2 cars would probably be cross shopped, but the Futura would get more exposure simply due to the fact that Fords Dealership network is much more expansive then Mazdas........besides both cars will share the same platform anyhow.

I don't see whats wrong with the Focus, especially considering the fact that it looks like a scaled down carbon copy of the Mondeo........it might even appeal more so to the masses, due to that styling change (as alot of people kind of had issues with the way the car was designed in the first place).

That's just it though. The US isn't getting the C1 based Focus for a long long time. Europe will get it next year, built in Spain. These images of the new Focus are a car still based on the current platform. Meanwhile, europe is getting the totally re-engineered Focus which looks nothing like the US car.

That said, the current Focus is still not a POS by any means. That's not what I was trying to say. It's still one of the best platforms available to US buyers in it's class. Handling dynamics and build quality are very good. It made C&D's Top Ten for the 4th year in a row. I have no doubt the restyled car will still be a good car. I am a little annoyed that we may never see the C1 platformed Focus.

We may get the "C2" then,

The '06 Futura will be a stretched and widened Mazda6, according to Ford.
