my parents have the same problem with their 97'mazda protege (wait a minute, ford owns mazda)the o/d light flashes and sometimes it either won't shift, or it shifts really hard. anyways they took it somewhere and they told us it was an electrical problem. they haven't got it fixed though and are thinking about just getting a new car.

Dont sound too bad then... Check the wiring to the ATX at least, see how that is, or take the instrument panel out, and unplug the lamp for the O/D Off light (so many crazy fixes!)

i just recently, well, and still have a similar problem. i was on the highway, and i noticed my car driving a bit funny, like tacing to high. thats when i saw the light. now my car (atx) wont shift until, well, i dont know, but it likes to wait to the last possible moment, unless in 1st, then this only happens 90% of the time. it just tacs to the max i guess. and i think the OD is always off.

What the hell does that mean?

Also it is a automatic, 96 Contour GL with a Zetec engine.

From what I was able to find, in the short time I had this morning, I would have to say that either you have a failing MLP (Range sensor) or Solenoid block. I will have time this afternoon to read a few more articles and let you know more then.

My car does the exact same thing. I took it to the place where the transmission was rebuilt several times because of this. It seems to start blinking when I am driving around for a while, especially in top gear. After the light starts blinking, it shifts really hard, eventually going back to normal. The transmission place said that they didnt know what was wrong with it, and when they ran the diagnostic, the only thing that came up was my EGR (which I still havent replaced) SO I don't know. I know that this car has 125,000 miles on it, and I am about halfway saved for my new car. I just hope it lasts until then.

Glad the hear you are a step closer to getting it running right.

By the way, IIRC, the range sensor is only about $20 - $30 bucks from the dealer.

The reason why they don't know is because they "did not run a diagnostic scan" of the tranny. Like I mentioned eariler in this article, they will have to hook a scanner (not just a code reader) to the OBDII port and run the car until the fault occurs. That is the only way you will ever find out what the problem is or the code anyway.

Good luck! Any other questions? Let me know.

When they hooked up mine to the machine they used a Snap On OBD II scanner, and the light wanst blinking. The guy just hooked it up and looked at the stored codes to find out what the deal was.
