1996 Contour GL automatic
Okay this happened a few times in February, but hasnt happened since then.

I start my car in the morning give it like five minutes to heat up. I drive like half mile, the O/D Off light blins green, I shut off the car, restart it and it wont come on again. This doesnt happen everday only once a while, also if it matters it was 19 this morning.
One final thing fluid changed February 27, hasnt came on since then except today.

You will have to take it to a shop (not Autozone) and have them read the code. This code is not accessable by using the standard scan-tool. Those tools can only read codes if the CEL is illuminated.

Normally though, this means that "something" electronically is going screwy with the tranny. What could it be? Pick a sensor or even something with the solenoid block.

Let us know what you find out.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that part. Sorry about that.

See, what they do is actually plug a scanner into the OBD port and drive the car around. The shop that I have dealt with the most uses something like the Snap-On MicroScan, but it is a little different. Sorta looks like an older model, but all that is besides the point.

The point is, they will plug this thing in and drive. They wait for the car to exhibet any problems, such as your O/D Light blinking, and the system will actually record all readings from the ECM for the last 15 seconds or so of operation. They can then, once back at the shop, see what the code is and check out what was going on at the time the malfuction occured.

Thing to keep in mind here. This could take some time. They will actually have to record something before they go tearing into it. I hope they would anyway. One time I had to leave my car at the shop for three days before the symptoms returned. As a matter of fact, I actually had to tell them what I would be doing and how I was driving for the symptoms to show themselves. They actually used my car to shofure customers around town and to run erruns. Like if someone needed to go get lunch or something, they would take my car. So keep all that in mind with this and good luck.

Does the OD light start blinking when you're passing, or going up a hill? (heavy engine load conditions) Have you noticed any slipping or is everything operating normally?

There was a post in here yesterday that identified some problems with the newer style (white plastic) TSS in older CD4E transmissions. The weaker signal given off by the new TSS is not picked up very well by the computer in the older cars & will throw a few tranny codes. Solution: Install an old style (TSS) sensor.

HTH

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

It shifts fine.

I was going up a slight hill when it did come on though come to think of it, and that was right when I came off the side street which is all flat. So I went right up a slight hill and that was the first time that day I went above 30 when it started blinking.

Didnt blink today by the way.

When it happened last week I went to a shop told them the deal, told them find the code they said it wasnt stored. Today I decided to go a different shop and try and they did the code.

PO731 1st gear ratio incorrect

What the hell does that mean?

Also it is a automatic, 96 Contour GL with a Zetec engine.

Got a crazy idea! Stop paying all your bills, save up alot of money, goto the Ford Dealership, and have them make you pay over $3,000 and you still get that problem afterwards!!!
Take it on the expressway, turn everything off so you can hear that beautiful engine, and listen to it shift, see if it shifts to 4th/Overdrive, or maybe your fluid is dirty or low....
