This is what I currently have: This is what I'm thinking about replacing it with. The first is a FMIC, but the second would be a top mount in a custom hood scoop. Now I know about top mounts so I don't want to hear about that. The main reason for me to do that is just to be different and to decrease the amount of intercooler pipes and have a cool functional hood scoop. How do the intercoolers compare in terms of flow and cooling capacity. I've heard that stock starions are good intercoolers and so are WRX intercoolers. The WRX one has almost twice as many rows as the starion though and I read in Corkey Bell's book that having an intercooler with more shorter vertical rows will flow more with less pressure loss than a horizontal row intercooler because you can have more rows in the vertical. The WRX is also thicker by at least half an inch than the starion though the core of the WRX is slightly smaller by at least half an inch on each side. Thoughts, comments, suggestions.

True WRX tuners remove the top mount to the front. That should tell you something. You can be different all you want but it doesn't mean it's smart.

not really!
most WRX tuners go to FMIC after spending $5k+ on upgrading the Turbo. and even then that doesn't mean that a front mount is any better then top mount. from wat i've seen being a part of their boards now is that they get em for cosmetic purposes.
PS: i have a WRX BOV adaptor flange for TXS RFL Bov if your interested!!

What's not smart is making vauge assumptions. I have been reaserching the WRX as a future vehical and it turns out the TMIC is actually a very decent unit. Upgraded top mounts are a waste and you only need the FMIC when they start reaching power levels of 350+ AWHP. SCC also tested a upgraded TMIC unit and found that the stocker performed very closly and definitly did not justify the 1000+ Dollars for the upgraded unit.
Seawulf: When choosing a IC I would be more concerned about core size and CFM ability then location, is your current one too small CFM wise? Have you tested the efficiency of that one?

aside from the discussion over which is better, front or top....the first thing that popped into my mind was it would be cool to have a functional hood scoop, but by the time you added the intercooler and plumbed it in, how tall would your hood have to be? seriously asking here, cause i am picturing like a 4" cowl with functional scoop, and that doesnt seem right, or attractive to me....

If he can get it toward the firewall enough, the scoop shouldn't be too unsightly. Shouldn't be much taller than a WRX scoop.

I haven't decided how to mount it yet. It would not fit like on the WRX, it'd be rotated 90degrees, and the scoop would fit just over it. The scoop would also be taller than a stock WRX scoop but no higher than a WRX STI scoop. For the overall shape I like the scoop on the Focus FR2000, though my scoop would have to be longer.
I'd also have to modify the intercooler so the exit would be the inlet and I'd have to block off the inlets and make a new outlet.
I've also read some articles saying the TMIC on the WRX is good, that's why I'm thinking about it. When it comes to intercoolers I've always put price above everything. My first one cost $24 at a pick-and-pull, the starion cost me $150 shipped and this WRX one cost $100 shipped. The only problem with doing the scoop is I'd probably have to buy a new hood cause my dad doesn't want me to cut my stock one, and that's an extra $130.

I don't see the interest in going to an interheater setup! Yes, I said an interheater. That is the way IC's come stock on our motors and the first then everyone does is move to a FMIC setup. TMIC soak up heat from the engine bay and often the air coming through a scoop isn't enough to cool the charge air. I wouldn't waste your time or money going to that unit. Shorter pipes are cool, but the throttle response you get isn't worth it.

I'd definitely stick with the Conquest FMIC. It is a very good unit and you get a lot more airflow through it.
