The first is a FMIC, but the second would be a top mount in a custom hood scoop. Now I know about top mounts so I don't want to hear about that. The main reason for me to do that is just to be different and to decrease the amount of intercooler pipes and have a cool functional hood scoop.
How do the intercoolers compare in terms of flow and cooling capacity. I've heard that stock starions are good intercoolers and so are WRX intercoolers.
The WRX one has almost twice as many rows as the starion though and I read in Corkey Bell's book that having an intercooler with more shorter vertical rows will flow more with less pressure loss than a horizontal row intercooler because you can have more rows in the vertical. The WRX is also thicker by at least half an inch than the starion though the core of the WRX is slightly smaller by at least half an inch on each side.
