You obviously don't know the advantages of a true CAI. DDavis got an 11whp gain on his ZETEC with a true, tuned CAI. That's 11hp on a 130hp engine.... hmmm yeah, not worth it at all.
Plus as I said the short ram and a heat sheild you are really just re-creating a restrictive air box with a cone filter in it.

I knew you guys would get touchy on this again...especially Kremit, but it's no use arguing with him, it's like talking to a wall. It's all good though. Like I have been saying, they both have their advantages and disavantages and either way it is hard to make an optimal setup with the rest of the car in the way. Where exactly did he gain this 11hp in the curve, probably near the bottom, right....It all depends on where you want your power, unless you love spouting peak numbers to impress people. Intake pipes and manifolds are very touchy when it comes to design and so forth, so anything is believable. Oh well, carry on.
Edit: Also I noticed you said "true CAI"....what exactly does "true CAI" mean to all of you guys...this might be interesting.

well according to the guys that developed the product...not only is that filter out of the engine bay, but the intake tube itself is noticeably colder and there were significant temp drops. How would that not be a benefit to you? Also, I have a short ram intake now...living in AZ it gets pretty hot during the day. And you can almost feel the performance drop, especially compared to taking the car out at night after a days rest. The cooler air gives it a little more zing, wouldnt you like to have that extra 'zing' all the time rather than just at night or cool weather? Plus, it still looks cool Also if you guys check in your engine bays, I believe the intake goes right where the fuse box is at now...right after the wheel well. So thats a little more protection from those hot engine fumes

The only disadvantage to a CAI is the possible chances of getting water on it,,, which are pretty easy to avoid, and the filter gets dirtier quicker, just gotta clean it more often. I'm pretty sure Darrel got gains across the board, though the 11whp was also using a custom chip to make it perfect,,, he had the chip before, so the 11whp was truly just from the intake with the chip programming just being changed a little to help take better advantage of the intake. True CAI means an intake that's filter is completely out of the engine bay and ideally in a place with some flowing air (while moving). Yes, the design has to be just right to get any good gains, but there is NO REASON to not run a good CAI over a good short "ram" air intake. A good CAI will always have better gains than a non-CAI intake,,, that's just a fact of life that's been proven by many dyno runs, some on contours.

Well......while I can't completely agree with you on this one, I know what you're getting at. Cooler air is always better, that's what I can agree with. But just like the long and short runners on the intake manifold, the tubing length affects the power curve and the power you will see. I have said this before and I don't feel like writing it all again, but that's how it goes. Just think about the concept behind the 2 different runner lengths and you should be able to pick it out. I was simply stating, since I already have an intake that works fine, minus the heatshield, I am not going to spend another $100 or $200 on one unless I find a really good reason to. Maybe I should actually look at this thing though . You guys are swearing by it, so I might just take a gander at it. Also, IMO a true CAI would be a filter placed in an area that had plenty of COLD AIR, hence the term CAI. Also, plenty of airflow would not be optimal, as IMO a place with fresh air circulating, but not moving around turbulently, would be optimal. This is of course for a N/A engine. That is pretty hard to acheive, so they keep coming out with something that at least gets it out of the bay, which in turn brings in long tubing....It's a never ending cycle.

while at the drag strip, a friend of mine removes his drivers side headlight, and makes his short ram intake stick out that hole, this is on a 01 or 02 (i forget the exact year) neon. i witnessed him knocking off .2 sec in the 1/4 mile this way, he even beat me on a run that i got a crappy launch, he does have a mtx though, and this was when i was almost stock

that's a good idea, and is used by a lot of smart drag racers. but it sucks when you put it back on for daily driving...

That's why I said GOOD CAI, good being the key word. Though pipe length, to an extent isn't really gonna affect you at all. There is only so much pipe you can put in a contour/cougar. What does affect you is pipe size, bends/turns, and pipe type. Darrel's was mandrel bent, 3" with smooth bends and good placement of the filter. So it gave really good gains. If you have access to a dyno and can mandrel bend some pipes, then you have the makings for a good CAI.

I though you were smarter than that....piping size in general, including very important length. is going to decide your fate. Oh well, like I said, talking to a wall. And on a side note, you did say true CAI, not good CAI, that's why I asked.
