Does he plan to compete with this system? If so, make the budget 2500 for components because it'll cost at least 1500 for a high quality install.

I will assume that between he and you and your friends that you will be able to intall everything and keep it looking nice.

So...Here is what I would probably consider for a breakdown of components.

HU: Sony CDX-C90 (750-800)
X-over/EQ: Sony XDP-210EQ (250.00)
Front/Rear speakers: Peerless CSX mids and tweeters + components to make your own crossover. (400.00 for everything)
If they don't have the ability to build their own crossovers, than I would probably consider Focal polykevlar component sets (600-800)
Subwoofers/amp:

SPL: 2 Blueprint 1203s and a Earthquake D2 amp (800.00)
SQ: 2 Lambda PL series 12" with any number of high quality 400-600 watt amps. (800.00)

Good amp for front component sets (400.00)

Spend the rest on dynamat (McMaster alternative), upgrading the electrical system (extra battery possibly??) and installation materials.
